With Slam Dunk and the Apostrophes.
So much was going on, I fear that I couldn't describe it all, and that it would be tedious if I did. Some of the highlights would have been: Brett standing atop the bass drum and barking like a dog, a lot, at the end of Abba Zaba, the guitarist from Slam Dunk adding a really well-timed vibraslap to Fly Around, and practically everybody in Portland joining for Train in Vain, Cowgirl In the Sand, and the 20+ minute jam that connected the two. Everybody in Slam Dunk came out: their drummer (who is a force!) took over from Steve, who played additional percussion; one of their guitarists added a faithful-to-the-original harmonica to Train In Vain. Members of Portland band Genders were up there, and people I didn't recognize. Midnight came in the middle of the hypnotic jam between the last two songs, and few would have noticed, I think, if Brett hadn't sung some improvised lyrics to clue us in.
I don't even know what to say about this show, except that it was much more a mutual celebration than a performance. The most relaxed and ecstatic atmosphere I've felt at a concert in I don't know how long, if ever. Thanks so much to the band for bringing the party to my home town.
